{"id":66689,"date":"2025-01-16T19:52:23","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T19:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cxtoday.com\/?p=66689"},"modified":"2025-01-21T14:32:08","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T14:32:08","slug":"the-avaya-layoffs-spread-leaving-europe-the-middle-east-thread-bare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cxtoday.com\/contact-center\/the-avaya-layoffs-spread-leaving-europe-the-middle-east-thread-bare\/","title":{"rendered":"The Avaya Layoffs Spread, Leaving Some Regions Thread Bare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Avaya continues to make global layoffs, with Europe and the Middle East hit particularly hard.<\/p>\n<p>While many online have suggested that this represents another round of cuts, it\u2019s a continuation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cxtoday.com\/contact-center\/the-cuts-are-deep-avaya-kickstarts-a-second-round-of-layoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those that Avaya announced in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move is just hitting different regions at different times for legal and processing reasons.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to <strong>Zeus Kerravala, Principal Analyst at ZK Research<\/strong>, who has been in contact with Avaya\u2019s senior management team.<\/p>\n<p>While Kerravala couldn\u2019t share the exact numbers of staff laid off, the analyst emphasized that the cuts were deep, with a significant impact on EMEA.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now, Europe, in particular the UK, is being disproportionately impacted for a couple of reasons,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First, laying off people in the UK is complicated, so Avaya has avoided that until now, and now it\u2019s coming all at once.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Also, the regions that support a tiny portion of the G1500 (Avaya\u2019s top global 1500 customers) \u2013 like the Middle East \u2013 will likely see Avaya maintain a minimal presence. Or, perhaps, [the company may] leave the region completely with a remote presence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In centering the business around Avaya\u2019s top 1,500 customers, Avaya\u2019s CEO Patrick Dennis \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cxtoday.com\/contact-center\/avaya-ceo-transition-alan-masarek-to-retire-patrick-dennis-steps-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who took charge of the company in September 2024<\/a> &#8211; is trying to implement a scaled-down version of the Broadcom playbook.<\/p>\n<p>This strategy aligns with its shift away from serving the entire contact center market.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Avaya has historically supported customers ranging from small businesses to enterprises with millions of employees.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, it has shed much of the small and mid-market, but it still has products and teams that serve those segments.<\/p>\n<p>Now, all customers not in their top 1,500 are essentially out of its scope \u2013 including those talented employees who support them.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, given this strategy, marketing personnel likely have no future at the company.<\/p>\n<p>Executives also haven\u2019t escaped unscathed. Kerravala added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They\u2019ve been targeting VP level and up as they have been overly fat up there, so they are leaving only meat on the bone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, the engineering and support teams have suffered. Yet, the numbers on these teams won\u2019t change significantly, as Avaya has reportedly decided to outsource many of these roles.<\/p>\n<p>The region least affected by the continued layoffs will be North America, where most of its G1500 is based.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, all these moves are ultimately an attempt to make the company leaner and more profitable.<\/p>\n<h2>What Now for Avaya Customers Outside Its G1500?<\/h2>\n<p>While Avaya makes this shift, much of its deep midmarket enterprise base will likely reconsider its business with the company, presenting opportunities for rival contact center vendors.<\/p>\n<p>As the market becomes increasingly crowded, that competition will likely prove fierce.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Avaya will stick to its strategy of serving large enterprises with on-premise, hybrid, and public cloud solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Such a streamlined strategy \u2013 on a significantly larger scale &#8211; has served Broadcom well. Indeed, that business runs at a 40+ percent operating margin.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, can Avaya\u2019s whittled-down team mirror that success and keep its G1500 for decades to come? Only time will tell.<\/p>\n<p><em>CX Today reached out to Avaya for a statement.
