\u201cThere\u2019s no one-size-fits-all answer,\u201d says Birker, when asked how government departments can ensure secure and compliant AI systems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, he advises agencies to begin with a privacy or compliance framework that governs how data is collected, accessed, and used.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt goes beyond just customer data. There\u2019s also internal data, and the systems accessing that data must be compliant too.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This includes not just the AI platform, but the entire surrounding architecture. From data ingestion tools to backend services and APIs, every component must meet internal standards and external regulatory requirements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only with that foundation in place can organizations begin building a trustworthy AI ecosystem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Transparency Builds Public Trust<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

While customers in the private sector often have the option to opt out of AI-enabled services, citizens don\u2019t always have that luxury. That\u2019s why transparency is critical.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of skepticism around AI in the public sector,\u201d Birker notes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople worry about what AI can do, what data it\u2019s using, and how it affects their lives.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To shift public perception, agencies must clearly communicate how AI is being used and, crucially, why.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExplaining the purpose behind the AI can flip the narrative,\u201d says Birker.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf people understand it\u2019s improving their experience \u2013 not just cutting corners \u2013 they become much more receptive.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In practice, this means highlighting tangible benefits like quicker response times, fewer call transfers, and smarter service routing \u2013 rather than masking automation behind vague explanations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people see that AI is improving their experience and doing so securely, they\u2019re far more likely to embrace it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Start Internally to Build Confidence<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to Birker, one of the most effective ways to foster trust in AI is to use it internally before deploying it to the public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery employee is a citizen too,\u201d he says. \u201cIf they use these tools daily and see the value firsthand, they\u2019re more likely to support them outside of work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This internal-first strategy reduces risk while building a workplace culture that sees AI as a useful ally \u2013 not a black box.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you\u2019ve seen AI streamline your own work, it\u2019s easier to believe it can do the same for public services.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It also addresses a common concern: job displacement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMost people don\u2019t want to be answering basic water billing questions at midnight,\u201d Birker says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAI can handle those repetitive tasks, freeing up staff to focus on more meaningful work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Real-World Rollout<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

ComputerTalk recently supported a government agency struggling with an overwhelming, unstructured dataset and limited human resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of rushing a full-scale AI deployment, the team opted for a phased rollout.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe started small, with a certified data set and clear guardrails on how the AI would be used,\u201d says Birker.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe showed users exactly where the AI was sourcing its information \u2013 and what its limits were.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That transparency helped build early confidence. As trust grew, the solution expanded incrementally, focusing on the data points that mattered most.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey went from feeling overwhelmed to having clear, data-driven priorities,\u201d Birker explains.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was never about launching AI for its own sake \u2013 it was about proving value and building trust at every step.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovation with Responsibility<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Security isn\u2019t an afterthought at ComputerTalk; it\u2019s built in from the ground up.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI represents a powerful opportunity for governments \u2013 but also a potential risk.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When implemented responsibly, it can improve citizen experiences, reduce workloads, and enhance service delivery. When handled poorly, it risks eroding public trust and exposing sensitive data.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By establishing robust frameworks, embracing transparency, and taking a collaborative, phased approach, agencies can strike the right balance between innovation and accountability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Birker puts it:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce people see how AI can help \u2013 not just what it is \u2013 they\u2019re more open to embracing it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
